Giddings Man Hit by Train
On Sunday morning, August 25, at 4:39 a.m., the Giddings Police Department responded to a call regarding a fatal train collision. A BNSF train was traveling northbound on the tracks near Bellville St. and Williamson St. in Giddings, north of Hwy. 290 and slightly east of Hwy. 77. According to the police report, Joseph Lucio Ruiz, 21 of Giddings, was struck by the train.
Joe Faust, Director of Public Affairs with BNSF Railroad, said that the incident happened on track maintained by Union Pacific Railroad and that the call came in that an individual was on or near that track.
“We are working with local authorities, emergency responders and Union Pacific Railroad to determine exactly what happened,” Faust said.
No other information is available at this time, as the case is still under investigation.
Ruiz was a 2011 graduate of Giddings High School and worked for Maverick Oilfield Services, Inc. as a welder.
A Rosary will be held for Joseph on Wednesday, August 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The funeral service will be Thursday, August 29, at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Giddings at 10 a.m. and burial at Giddings City Cemetery immediately following.
