Tragic Accident Claims Life of Northrup Man
A two car accident claimed the life of a 33-year-old man from Northrup. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Michael Mitschke was traveling southbound on Hwy. 77, just south of Highway 21, driving a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer in the outside lane. He was behind a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by Willie Jean Benson of Lexington, who had two young passengers in her vehicle.
The report said that Mitschke tried to change lanes into the inside lane without having sufficient clearance between his car and the Benson car. The Chevrolet struck the Ford on the left rear portion of the vehicle, causing both vehicles to travel off the road into the west ditch, and rolling several times.
Mitschke was ejected from his vehicle, and was declared dead at the scene.
Benson was taken by Star Flight to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin and the two young passengers were taken by B & M Ambulance to Dell Children’s Hospital, also in Austin.
Witnesses to the accident indicated that Mitschke was traveling at a high rate of speed, which was one contributing factor to the accident reported by DPS. DPS also indicated on their accident report that another contributing factor to the accident was Mitschke failing to pass safely.
An autopsy report has been ordered. Trooper Jeremy Weiser investigated the accident.
Michael Mitschke was employed by Leeco Industrial Plastics in Northrup and managed his family’s ranch in Buffalo, Texas. His funeral was held Tuesday, August 20. A full obituary can be found in today’s paper.
