Sudden Death at Giddings State School
A 41-year-old employee of the Giddings State School collapsed and died suddenly Sunday morning, August 18, shortly after arriving to work.
Herbert “Skip” Legg, III, who had been employed with the Giddings State School since August 2012, arrived to work shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday morning. He worked at the guard house at the main entrance of the facility.
Witnesses said he appeared to have a seizure and then passed out. All the employees at the School are certified in CPR, so those nearby began CPR immediately.
The school nurse arrived on the scene and helped to administer CPR, until B & M Ambulance arrived. B & M continued CPR, but all the attempts to revive Skip were unsuccessful.
Deputy Ledenbach and Sergeant Allen, with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, were dispatched, along with Justice of the Peace Troy Bise, who made the declaration of death at about 6 a.m. and ordered an autopsy.
Judge Bise said on Tuesday morning that he had a preliminary report from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office, which indicated he died of a heart attack.
Skip lived in Caldwell with his family and died one day before his 42nd birthday. He leaves behind a wife, five daughters and three sons.
