Sports Thoughts

by Mike Organ

The Spurs looked good in defeating Miami in game one. In the second game, the Spurs were okay until they went stone cold and got outscored 23-3 in a short period. They head to San Antonio with home court advantage. I think they will fall to Miami in six games. The final game will be in Miami after SA wins one of three at home.

Giddings ex and Texas Tech pitcher Trey Masek was selected early in the Major League draft by the Chicago Cubs. He stands to be a fairly wealthy young man. Trey is the son of Giddings Assistant Superintendent Andy Masek.

For a team that finished on a roll in district play, the Eagles did not get as many players on the honor team as I felt they should.

Nearby LaGrange won the state championship in 3A baseball, even after losing two district games to Giddings. The LG girls got third. Another Fayette County team – Weimar - won the girls, and the boys got third.

Hallettsville hit our district champion Salado’s pitching like it was batting practice. The Brahmas got 18 hits in the 16-3 blasting of Salado. Hallettsville went on to win the 2A state championship with a 4-2 win over Hughes Springs.

William Miller was at his usual post at the State Baseball tourney. He said it was his 24th consecutive tourney. He studies his sports harder than most people I know. He loves baseball, with football coming in second. He had checked to see which Region had the most tourney winners. He also had all the rankings of the four teams in each division. Not many of the #1 ranked teams won the state trophy.

I found out today, Marla Mitchell is moving to Lago Vista with her family. That means the Eagle football team lost not only Jason Holcomb, but one of the top returning players. Don’t blame Coach Muhl. He can only coach the players that go to school in Lexington.
