Sports Thoughts

By Mike Organ

Did you pick all the MVP’s and Coaches Pride winners that the coaches did? I think they did an excellent job of choosing athletes.

The University of Texas is now realizing there is something wrong with their athletic programs. It is focused more on money than on winning. The basketball team has players just leaving, not for a known destination, just to get out of the problems in Austin. This will also affect recruiting. Texas used to have players leaving for the NBA; now it may be for a junior college or a Division 3 school.

Baseball will be next, because they could not even qualify for the conference tourney. Will Coach Augie retire like the girls basketball coach did a year ago. Some argue Coach Augie is the winningest coach in college baseball, but who did he replace? The winningest coach in college baseball, Cliff Gustafson, who was more or less made to resign because of some summer camp money going to his son. Now they want to rename the UT baseball field after him. I think one of the coaches will not be at UT next season.

Coach Mack had better be in the top ten next season or the heat will be on his britches. There are already some hot on his tail about the last two seasons with all the highly rated recruits not living up to their billing.

We should have some Little League all-star teams begin play about the first of July. That will always create a little interest.

The Eagles are competing in the 7-on-7 local tourneys to qualify for the state tourney.

Ex-Lexington coach Art Behren and ex Eagle assistant Kadie Dodd’s, LaGrange team plays Sealy for a slot in the state UIL softball tourney.
