MS Tennis

by Marla Mitchell

The Lexington Middle School tennis team competed in the district tournament Saturday, May 4, 2013. Other district teams participating were Academy, Cameron, & Florence. Our young netters did extremely well. Seventh graders competing were Chelsea Schneider, Colby Bexley, and Sam Perry. Chelsea won the girls’ singles division defeating an Academy athlete 7-5, a Florence girl 6-1, and another Florence girl 6-1 in the championship. Colby and Sam breezed through the boys’ doubles division beating teams from Cameron andAcademy. They only lost one game in both matches.

In eighth grade competition, several more athletes made the trip to Taylor. Jaclyn Alford, Mariah Garza, Courtney Strain, Halle Mitchell, Veronica Ortega, and Madison Stefek participated for the girls team. Halle and Madison, the defending district champs, beat a team from Cameron 6-2 to qualify for the finals. They beat a team from Florence 6-1 to claim first place. Jaclyn and Mariah also played doubles while Courtney and Veronica competed in singles. Both girls fought through long points and see-saw game counts before being knocked out of the tournament. Boys playing for the Eagles were Chase Allert, Ryan Garrison, Tanner Towery, and Jacob Townsend. Allert won in the first round, but bowed out to last year’s champion in the quarterfinals. Garrison made it to the finals on the other side of the bracket defeating 3 athletes from Academy with scores of 6-2, 6-2, and 6-3. In the championship match, he coasted by winning 6-1 against yet another Academy netter. The team of Towery and Townsend beat a team from Academy 6 – 0 and then followed up by winning the doubles division with a score of 6-1 against a team from Cameron.

It was a good day of tennis and the future looks good for Lexington tennis.
