Brown/Mitchell Third in State Tennis

by Mike Organ

The mixed doubles tennis team of Mackenzie Brown and Eriq Mitchell, from Lexington High School, saw their state championship dreams come to an end in the state semi-finals Monday afternoon. Brown/Mitchell had defeated the team from Ingram Tom Moore in the quarterfinals 6- 4, 6-2. However, they lost to the team from Wall High School 6-4, 4-6, 1-6 in the semi-final match.

The Ingram match started off in a Lexington way, as Brown/ Mitchell stroked out to a 5-1 game lead before a mini-rally by the Ingram team brought the game count to 5-4. Mitchell then held serve to take the first set 6-4. The second set was dominated by the Lexington duo as they volleyed and stroked their way to the 6-2 set and match win.

In the semi-final match, Lexington won the first set as Brown/Mitchell attacked the female member of the Wall team. Lexington went to a 5-3 lead as they broke serve of the Wall female. Wall answered back by breaking Mitchell’s serve. Brown/ Mitchell then rallied on a hard fought point to win the set 6-4.

That was to be the last set won by Lexington. Wall jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but Brown/ Mitchell fought back to 5-4 before losing the set point.

The final set went the Wall way as momentum was in the West Texans’ camp.

Brown/Mitchell received bronze state medals for their efforts. This ends the high school career for the multi-talented Brown, a three time state tourney qualifier. Mitchell has one more year to try for a gold medal.
