Just a Thought.......

Rev. DaveFischer Rev. DaveFischer Your calendar may not show it, but if you are reading this column on May 2, it is the National Day of Prayer. Given the recent events in our nation, and our state, we could certainly use it.

Funny thing about prayer. Most folks limit their theology of prayer to “gimme”. They pray for something, and if they do not get it, they quit praying, maybe even quit God.

Forgotten are prayers of praise, adoration, appreciation, and confession, which is not surprising if you have a notion that God is the Great “Santa Claus in the Sky”.

There is, however, another word about prayer that needs to be said. “Prayer changes us”. When we focus on the good things God has done for us, when we remember the beauty God has made for us, when we thank God for the love that has been given to us, and when we are honest about our shortcomings (dare I say “sins”), then we are changed. And, we are changed for the better.

Yes, we may not get all that we pray for, but if we “Pray Large” we will be a gift to those around us.

It’s “Just A Thought” on this National Day of Prayer.

Rev. David Fischer is the Pastor at First Christian Church in Lexington
