Florence Rally Nips Eagles

by Mike Organ

Lexington went into the bottom of the seventh inning with a 6-4 lead. It wasn’t enough, as Florence staged a furious rally to score three runs without an out, to win the game.

Lexington jumped out to a quick one run lead in the top of the first inning. Logan Meuth reached on an error to lead off the game. Brother W.E. Meuth followed with a double to get Logan home. A ground out got W.E. to third base with one out. Chase Hibbeler hit a fly ball to short centerfield. The fielder dropped the ball, but quickly grabbed it to keep W.E. at third. A strike out and a ground out ended the inning.

Florence got three runs in the second inning on three hits, two walks and a hit batter. Lexington answered in the top of the third with three to retake the lead. Logan Meuth reached on an error, stole second, and moved to third on a ground out. Logan scored on Kogan Garrett’s ground out. Hibbeler doubled, Derek Dane walked to put runners on. Both moved up a bag with a wild pitch. The Buff catcher tried to pick Hibberler off at third, but the ball sailed into left field, allowing the run to score and Dane moved to third. Corey Strain hit a dribbler toward third that was erred on, giving Dane the go ahead run.

Lexington took the lead in the sixth, scoring a run without a hit. Jason Washington walked with one out. An errant pickoff throw allowed him 2nd base. Jason stole third and, when the ball sailed into left field, he scored with ease. Lexington got what they thought was an insurance run in the top of the seventh. W.E. Meuth led off with a single. A passed ball on the catcher moved W.E. to second. Garrett got an infield single to put runners at the corners. Dane hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored W.E.

In insurance words, Lexington did not have enough coverage. Florence got three consecutive hits and then hit a hot shot that was erred in the infield and outfield, as the winning run crossed the plate.
