Central Texas Beekeepers School Scheduled
The one-day school is designed to help those interested in Beekeeping to understand what is involved in starting the hobby and becoming involved in beekeeping. Our beginning sessions will introduce the participant to bees and explain how they work, what it takes to safely handle them, and where to purchase the necessary equipment. Students will even be able to “suit up” and participate while a live beehive is opened and examined.
For those that already have bees, intermediate sessions are available to help learn about bee diseases, proper hive management for honey and how to raise queens. Over 250 door prizes will be presented to participants.
The school begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Brenham and concludes around 5:15. A catered Bar-B-Que meal complete with Blue Bell Ice Cream (we ARE in Brenham!) for dessert is included in the registration fee.
Being a family-oriented hobby, a children’s area for those 3 through 6 years old will be provided. This area will be under adult supervision and will involve bee-related activities and crafts appropriate for the age of those registering as children.
A vendors’ area will be available with items to purchase. The Central Texas Beekeepers has a limited number of complete, painted hives, ready for bees, available for purchase.
The cost of the school is $40 for the first adult from a family and $30 for additional adults (18 years of age and older) from the same household. Children under 18 are $20 each. Registration fees increase after March 19.
Last year there were 380 people in attendance at the school. Participation is expected to exceed 500 this year.
The Central Texas Beekeepers meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month except November and December, at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Brenham. You may visit our website listed above and view us on face book at Central Texas Beekeepers and Friends.
