Just a Thought.......
No, I am not. I come from San Antonio where they have street signs and loops and turnarounds and numerically sequential addresses.
Here we have memories.
“Where do you live?” I ask. “I live on the old (fill in the blank) place.” No wonder I am lost. Nobody lives in their own house, but in one that belongs to someone else.
If I ask for directions, by street address, in town, it just frustrates the locals.
“Just tell me who you want to see.”, they say, and good directions quickly follow.
If I ask for directions out of town, I need to know that county roads are not necessarily in numerical order and that many familiar landmarks are no longer there.
“Just past the water tower” was a great instruction before they tore it down.
“Look for bales of hay” is no help at all. Recently, four different people gave me directions to a certain parishioners home, but none of them bothered to mention that I could find it easily because there was a great arch over the entrance bearing my member’s name. I finally got there with the words of the last adviser in my ear. “ At least I think that’s where he lives, but maybe not.” So, if you see me driving around in circles, say a prayer, or better yet, lead me back to Lexington.
