Erwin Gustav Billig


Funeral services for Erwin Billig, 97 of Giddings, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert J. Tiner officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 276, will follow in the Giddings City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 7:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Erwin Gustav Billig was born on May 31, 1915 in Sealy, Texas to Eduard Claude & Henrietta (Stuessel) Billig. He was baptized on June 17, 1915 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sealy by Rev. O.H.A. Hoemann and confirmed in 1929 at Trinity Lutheran Church by Rev. W.M. Schriner. His confirmation verse was Luke 11:28 “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Erwin attended the Mixville school where he was active in the 4-H program and was a member of the 4-H Congress. He attended St. Johns College in Winfield, Kansas before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in December of 1941. He served in Guam until his Honorable Discharge was received in February of 1946. He continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserves until retiring on May 31, 1975, having obtained the rank of Major.

Erwin was united in marriage to Edith Sharlemann on November 24, 1944 by Rev. W.F. Peters in Hastings, Nebraska and their union lasted for over 52 years until her death in June of 1997. He was married to Delores (Bethke) Moss on August 2, 1998 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings by Rev. Wilbern Michalk. Erwin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings, the American Legion Post 276 in Giddings and the Lee County Seniors in Action. He enjoyed ranching, gardening, hunting and spending time outdoors. Erwin passed away during the early morning hours of Friday, February 8, 2013 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed & Henrietta Billig; his wife, Edith Billig; son-in-law, Russell Cottone; four sisters, Alice Cockrell, Esther Wilke, Mildred Kaechele and Helen Morgan and two brothers, Adolph Billig and Harold Billig.

Erwin is survived by his wife, Delores Billig of Giddings; two daughters, Barbara & Joe Cavazos of Corpus Christi and Margaret Cottone of Peachtree City, GA; son, Robert & Caroline Billig of Rockdale; step-son, Russell & Ladonna Neumann of Giddings; 12 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 3 stepgrandchildren; sister, Marie Stephens of Oregon; two brothers, Herbert & Bernice Billig of Somerville and Leon “Mike” & Virginia Billig of Burnet, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Missions Fund at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 300 North Grimes Street, Giddings, Texas 78942.
