Deadline Looms for Sign Up for City and School Board Elections
Sign up for City and School Board elections are in full swing and have been for several weeks; however, no one has picked up a packet to run! While that may seem a little unusual, it really isn’t. Often incumbents wait until the last minute to pick up a packet and to file for re-election, as do newcomers to local politics.
This year, three positions are opening on the Lexington City Council, those held currently by Opal Jane Lewis, Tim Brown and Greg Langehennig.
Two positions are opening on the Lexington Independent School District’s Board of Trustees, those held currently by Russell Iselt and Alan Turner.
We were able to speak to some of the incumbents, including Lewis and Langehennig on the City Council. Lewis said she intends to run again and Langehennig said he hasn’t made a decision yet, although he “enjoys what he does on the council.” Brown was not available to comment.
Iselt said he plans to run for the School Board again, and, although we could not confirm it, we learned that Turner does not plan to run for reelection.
This year’s deadline to sign up is Friday, March 1, 2013. Packets can be picked up at City Hall Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m . for City Council positions and at the LISD Administration Building Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The election will be held on Saturday, May 11.
