Ellford “E.R.” Bigon


Funeral services for Ellford Bigon, 88 of Northrup, Texas, were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas with Rev. John Schmidt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Bigon passed away the afternoon of Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

Ellford Bigon was born on April 6, 1924 in Northrup, Texas to Herman John & Alma Theresia (Miertschin) Bigon. He was baptized on April 13, 1924 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Herman Schmidt and confirmed on March 21, 1937 also at St. Paul Lutheran Church by Rev. Schmidt. His confirmation verse was Revelations 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” He attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Serbin and graduated from Giddings High School in 1943. Ellford was united in marriage to Wilma Ruth Noack on November 2, 1947 at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Winchester, Texas by Rev. H. Traugatt. Their marriage was blessed with three children, John, Sue and Jim Bob.

Ellford was a longtime area rancher and a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin where he had served in various capacities, including president of the congregation, elder and school board chairman. He was one of the few people in the area who still was able to speak Wendish. He was a former member of the South Lee County Volunteer Fire Department and had served on the Lee County Appraisal District Board. Ellford & Wilma owned and operated the Northrup Store from 1964 until 1974. He enjoyed taking care of his cattle, hunting, gardening and spending time with his family. Ellford will always be remembered as having an iron will and being the caretaker of his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Rudy Bigon and Arnold Bigon and two sisters, Irene Noack and Esther Urban.

Ellford is survived by his wife of 65 years, Wilma Bigon of Northrup; three children, John Bigon of Northrup, Sue Wachsmann & her husband, Melvin of Spring and Jim Bob Bigon & his wife, Kathleen of Northrup; three grandchildren, Chris Wachsmann & his wife, Alainna of Hockley, Melanie Wachsmann of Tomball and Shawn Bigon of Northrup; three sisters-in-law, Lillian Teinert of La Grange, Thelma Kieschnick of Winchester and Ann Meier & her husband, Foster, of Weatherford, as well as numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
