A Second Fatal Crash in One Week in Lee County

Last week was not a good week for Lee County travelers. Two fatal crashes were investigated by DPS and local law enforcement, one just south of Lexington and a second just west of Giddings.

The second accident happened Friday morning, January 11, at about 10 a.m., on US 290 about .5 mile east of mile marker 638. The weather was clear and dry on this morning, as opposed to the wet weather that influenced the accident that occurred Wednesday morning.

According to the DPS report, Shawn Quenten Harris, 49 of Ledbetter, was traveling eastbound on US 290 when he crossed the center line in his 2002 Nissan Xterra. After he crossed the line, he hit a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Shauna Janean Lennox, 28 of Giddings, head on. A third vehicle, a 2011 Toyota Corolla driven by Connie Lynn Warmke, 52 of Brenham, was following Lennox and struck her during the event.

Harris was declared dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Troy Bise. Gaylen Janice Meuth, 52 of Jonestown, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was injured in the crash and taken to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. Lennox was also injured, as was James Warren McCoy, age 2 from Giddings, and Warmke. McCoy was taken to Brackenridge in Austin and Warmke was taken to St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

All drivers and passengers were reported to have been wearing their seat belts.

DPS Trooper Robert W. Thorp investigated the accident, along with Trooper Jeremy Weiser, members of the Giddings Volunteer Fire Department, Sgt. Richard Krenek and members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
