Blinn posts record enrollment for winter minimester
Blinn College’s winter minimester has posted record enrollment with 1,195 students registered for the three-week term, most of whom will take advantage of the school’s online offerings.
This year’s enrollment marks a 16.81 percent growth over last year. The minimester’s greatest expansion came via distance learning classes, which allow students to take their courses online, in some cases without ever needing to step foot on campus. This year 742 students enrolled for distance education classes, a 50.2 percent increase over the 2011 winter minimester.
Blinn’s Brenham campus also saw a jump in minimester enrollment with 73 students, a 40.38 percent increase.
While the College saw a 16 percent enrollment jump, it saw more than double that leap in contact hours, which measures the time students spend with their instructors. Blinn will post 57,408 contact hours, a 35.75 percent increase over last year. State funding is based on contact hours rather than enrollment numbers.
Blinn’s distance learning offerings include classes that require no campus visits, as well as “blended” classes that combine online learning with face-to-face instruction. A recent survey conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group showed that roughly one-third of all college students now take an online class.
Blinn offered 30 online classes for the winter minimester, including anthropology, geography, government, history, music, psychology, physical education, sociology and information technology.
“Students whose family likes to travel during the holidays love our distance learning options because they don’t have to be on campus and they don’t even have to be at their homes to take our online classes,” said Dr. Mark Workman, dean of distance learning. “As long as they have access to the internet they can study and do their coursework on the go.”
