Fatal Accident on FM 696 W

One person was declared dead at the scene of a one car accident that occurred Monday afternoon, November 5, on FM 696 West, near the intersection of CR 337, a few miles outside of Lexington.

Gregory Steven Spaw, a 40 year old man from College Station, was traveling west on FM 696 at about 2:40 Monday afternoon in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The DPS report indicated that he traveled off the right shoulder as he entered a curve near CR 337 and overcorrected to the left. That maneuver caused him to travel across both lanes of the roadway into the eastbound ditch. As he entered the ditch, the truck began to slide sideways and rolled onto its right side and struck a barbed wire fence and a tree. The truck fell back down onto its wheels and came to a rest facing east.

DPS Corporal II Jeremy Weiser was dispatched to the scene, along with Lexington EMS and Lexington VFD.

Spaw died at the scene. His body was taken by Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home at 3:15 p.m. The DPS report indicated that a contributing factor in the accident was unsafe speed. Spaw was not wearing his seatbelt.
