Pink Ribbon Affair

by Carolyn Jackson

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, the Lee County Area Cancer Resource Center (LCACRC) and Combined CommunityAction held the 6th Annual Pink Ribbon Affair. This breast cancer awareness fundraiser at the Giddings American Legion Hall was a fun and informative evening. The special attraction of the evening was the Creative Cups for the Cause art bra contest and exhibit. People from the local area and beyond submitted a total of 66 entries.

The art bras were judged prior to the opening of the event. The judging team included Michael Morgan and Linda Pruitt of Giddings. They critiqued each entry and selected winners in the following categories:

“Breast” of Show – “Bouquets of Hope” by Beverly Lee

Best Awareness Theme – “Let’s Button Up Breast Cancer” by Sandy Courrier

Most Beautiful – “Feathered Fanfare” by Kathy Gordon

Most Creative – “Nail Breast Cancer” by Andy Whitten

Most Creatiave Title – “Nick Rack” by Gloria Brockenbush

Best Youth Entry – “Blooming Cancer Free” by Jennifer Crosby

Best Work of Art – “One Out of Eight” by Carol Mueller

The art bra calendar showcasing the art bras and survivors is available at Lee County Area Cancer Resource Center/Combined Community Action in Giddings. Call 979-540- 2981 for more information.

Additional activities enjoyed during the Pink Ribbon Affair included a candle tribute in honor of and in memory of those diagnosed with breast cancer, a live and silent action, music by Purly Gates and Greg Lowry, and a special song by a group of breast cancer survivors. Master of Ceremonies was Joyce Bise. Speakers on survivorship and caregiving were Shaina Thornton Stamport and Bennie Thornton. The auctioneer for the live auction was Nick Hinze.

The winners of the two drawings were Angie Prihoda of Giddings and Wayne Michalke of LaGrange.

The Pink Ribbon Affair was a success due to the great outpouring of support from the community at large. Thank you to the community for their generous support of The Pink Ribbon Affair and to all those who volunteered their time and talents to make the event a big success. We look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s event.
