Buffs Cruise by Hornets
Giddings beat Caldwell 42-22 in an unimpressive football game Friday night. Giddings scored often early in the game and then cruised to the end of the game.
The Buffs first score came with just 2:25 gone in the game when Joseph Glenn broke on a long run for the first score. Michael Rangel toed the PAT for a 7-0 Buff lead.
The next Giddings score came with 3:41 in the first period on a pass to Josh Mack from Adam Dock. The pass play caught Caldwell by surprise after four running plays had moved the ball out to the 40-yard line. The Buff defense had bent, but stopped Caldwell in the red zone. Giddings then moved the ball the length of the field in five plays. Rangel was again good to move the score to 14-0.
After the long pass score, Caldwell moved the ball smartly down the field and into the red zone once more. Once more the Buff defense called a halt to the Caldwell drive. On the first play Deon Hickey broke on an 85-yard trip to the end zone. With Rangel’s kick Giddings led 21-0 with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.
Giddings continued to score with two more scores in the second quarter put 35 points on the scoreboard at halftime. Dock scored on a quarterback sneak from one yard out for the first score and threw a 21-yard scoring pass to Josh Mack for the second.
Hickey scored on a 40-yard dash in the third quarter to account for all the Buff touchdowns. The Buffs played a lot of their reserves the entire second half by mixing them in with the regulars and resting various starting personnel during the last 24 minutes of the game.
Caldwell scored twice in the fourth period to make the score much more respectable.
Giddings opens district play Friday night by hosting former state power Cuero. The Gobblers are 3-2 for the season.
