Truck Overturns at Shady Circle

An eighteen wheeler, carrying a load of tires, rolled on its side and dumped hundreds of tires after taking out a stop sign, a tree and a fence north of town last Wednesday.

Gary Leroy Mercer, 47 of Garland, Texas, was driving a 2008 Freightliner at about 11 a.m. He was southbound on Highway 77 in the outside lane, entering Lexington at the south entrance of Shady Circle, when his right front tire drifted off the right shoulder, causing him to lose control, taking him into the west ditch. He struck a large tree, completely taking it out, and rolled the truck and trailer on its side as they came upon Shady Circle Road. The vehicle slid on the left side, through the ditch, striking the stop sign, another tree and a fence before coming to a stop.

Mercer was taken by Lexington EMS to Little River Hospital in Rockdale with non-incapacitating injuries. The accident report indicated that he was wearing his seatbelt.

Trooper Jeremy Weiser investigated the accident.
