Just a Thought.......

Rev. DaveFischer Rev. DaveFischer Teachers get a lot of criticism, especially if they do not treat our little ones precisely the way we think that they should.

They also suffer from a national obsession about education where the alarm is constantly being sounded about the failure of our children in this or that area and the blame comes back to the schools.

What gets lost is the great amount of good they are doing to shape the future of this country every day.

I know because I was saved by a teacher. Mrs. Ancell, my 8th grade English instructor caught me with a comic book hidden behind my text.

Announcing that it seemed I had a little too much time on my hands, she gave me two options. One, go to the principal’s office, or, two, enter a speech contest next week. I had no idea what a speech contest was, but I had been to the office and that made my choice much easier.

History will show that I did not do well my first time out as a speaker. But, it will also record that it set me on the way to a changed life.

Because of Mrs. Ancell, I have spoken to thousands of people in hundreds of different places. Sometimes, it made a difference and her influence kept going.

I think about her often, and I believe teachers still have the same life-changing power today.

Thank you, one and all, for the good job you are doing.

Rev. David Fischer is interim Minister at First Christian Church in Lexington
