Sherwood Celtic Music Festival & Highland Games
Mark your calendars for the 2nd Annual Sherwood Celtic Music Festival & Highland Games on Saturday and Sunday, September 22nd and 23rd. The festival will celebrate the entire musical history of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, & Brittany.
The festival will feature over 20 Celtic bands, including Ireland’s own Teada, Austin’s Blaggards, Texas Celtic favorites Clandestine, plus Cleghorn, Brizeus, The Jig is Up, Marc Gunn and the Brobdingnagian Bards, Black Irish Texas, Houston’s Constant Billy, Renaissance Faire favorites Saxon Moon, Bedlam Bards, & Shillelagh, harpists Therese Honey & Cindy Schaufenbuel, San Antonio Pipe’s & Drums and more.
There will also be plenty of entertainment for the wee ones. Sherwood’s children’s area, Once Upon a Time will have two stages, featuring the Pignut Flea Circus, fresh from Ireland, as well as Willow and Her Giant, a magical pair of musical story-tellers. There will be a legion of Roman soldiers giving living history lessons about the Celtic people that the Romans found when they came to Britain.
Also, Competitive Scottish Heavy Athletics, including the Caber Toss, Stone Put, and Hammer Throw, will take place throughout each day. If you’ve ever wanted to see a man, or woman, throw a telephone pole end over end, this is your chance. No one remembers why the Scots do this, but it sure is fun!
You’ll also find Irish dancing, history lectures, family clans, a harpist circle, bagpipe competitions, and the finest ales and mead around.
Over 75 vendors with handmade arts and crafts will of course be open for shopping, including Austin’s own “Things Celtic”. Great Food and Cold Beverages will keep you going as you experience the music, games, and artistry of the Celtic Nations.
