Eagles Travel to Marlin

by Mike Organ

The Eagles’ second scrimmage of 2012 will be in Marlin Thursday night at 6:00 pm for the JV and 7:00 pm for the varsity. The Bulldogs are picked to finish sixth in the eight-team District 13-2A DI, with Cameron, Lago Vista, Salado, Troy, McGregor, Academy, and Florence. This may be the toughest district in 2A DI.

Marlin returns six offensive and seven defensive starters from 2011. They lost in the bi-district round last season en-route to a 5- 6 record.

Marlin has had some internal problems in the last few years that has hampered continuity in their athletic program. Gone is Coach Malone, who was there for years and developed many college athletes. The coach hired to replace him lasted one year, and now new coach Tim Hensley inherits a team that is expected to finish in the second tier of their district.

Marlin does have some quality, skilled athletes in running back Romello Brooks and receiver Ladarian Hopwood. Who will disperse the ball to these athletes? How?

Defensively, the Bulldogs have outstanding players in lineman Adam Jackson and linebacker Denerian Willis. Marlin is not the team it was five years ago, but it is still a formidable 2A team.
