Just a Thought.......

Rev. DaveFischer

We small town folks are an interesting bunch. On the one hand, we like things the way they are and will go out of our way to keep them the same as always.

On the other hand, we love to tell stories about the local characters who are a definite deviation from the norm. Usually these tales are recountings of delightful fun which added color to our lives when they happened and again in the retelling.

And, we also are moved by those who take actions which are above and beyond the ordinary. We call them “good folks” and occasionally “saints”. They inspire us and remind us there is a level of living beyond the ordinary.

All in all, it is a precarious balance, one not easily maintained, and sometimes there is a period of painful jostling as we seek to keep it all in its proper place.

This is why we have churches and preachers, even though we aren’t always there to fill a pew and hear a Word. We need reminders that all of this only works if we keep those two top instructions.

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Anything less tilts the balance and challenges our beloved way of living.

It is interesting to me that those words came out of the mouth of a man from a small town. Maybe he knew what was necessary to keep the peace and secure the future.
