McDade Watermelon Festival Names Car Show Winners


Kaci Sandifer, daughter of Mike and Lisa Sandifer of Lexington, was given a 2012 College Scholarship by Pam Iselt on behalf of the Lexington Garden Club during the Club’s annual Ice Cream Social that was held on the Square. Kaci will be a junior at Coastal Bend Dental Hygiene School.

The 12th Annual McDade Watermelon Festival Car Show drew 97 entries on Saturday, July 14, ranging from a 1918 Ford to a 2011 Camaro. This year’s winners of the judged categories included the following.

60-99 Trucks – 1st went to David Sherrill of Blue with his 1973 Ford; Street Rod/Custom-1st went to James Marx of Taylor with his 1930 Ford; Pre 1940 cars – 1st went to Kellye Block of Snyder; 40-54 cars – 1st went to Don Jones of Georgetown with his 1950 Chevy; 55-79 Cars – Garry Hurta of Pflugerville with his 1973 Plymouth; 80-99 Cars – 1st went to Ray Prior of San Antonio with his 1982 Fiat; 00-12 Cars – 1st went to Julie Wagner of Giddings with her 2011 Camaro; Pre 60 trucks – 1st went to Richard Hopperstad of Manor with his 1951 Ford; Pre 85 Corvette – 1st Place went to Jerome Jenkins of Smithville with his 1974 Corvette; 85 – 12 Corvette – 1st went to Timothy Milliken of Belton for his 2008 Corvette; 67- 81 Camaro – 1st went to Scott Alexander of Round Rock for his 1969 Camaro; 82 – 12 Camaro – 1st went to Bob Agan of Killeen for his 2010 Camaro; Pre 85 Mustang – 1st went to Roger Ramirez of Sugarland; 85-12 Mustang – 1st went to Stuart McHenry of Lexington for his 2001 Mustang.


David Sherrill of Blue won first place in this year’s 12th Annual McDade Watermelon Car Show in the 1960-1999 Truck category. He is pictured with his winning 1973 Ford pickup truck, full of watermelons, which David brought to the event for use in the highly competitive watermelon eating and seed spitting contests! Car Show Committee members included Earl and Kathi Gremillion, Janice and Roger Payne, Carl and Lola Cole, and Andy and Janie Amescua. Sponsors included Dale Olson Surveying, Luminant, Texas Foam, Carousel Lounge, and Stressless Auto.
