Hunter Safety Course Offered

A hunter safety education course will be taught on Tuesday, August 21 and Wednesday, August 22 by Clinton Bippert of La Grange. The course will be taught from 5:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. each evening and students must attend both sessions of the course. Ten hours of instruction is a requirement to receive a hunter safety certificate. The course will be taught at the La Grange City Hall. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department requires every Texas hunter born on or after September 2, 1971 to successfully complete a hunter education training course. If you were born on or after September 2, 1971, and you are:

* 17 years old and older - you must successfully complete a hunter education course to hunt in Texas.

* 9-16 years old - you must successfully complete a hunter education course or be accompanied by a licensed hunter 17 years old or older.

* Under 9 years - you must be accompanied by licensed hunter 17 years old or older.

*Nine year olds attending the course are encouraged to be accompanied by a parent.

Many states require a hunter safety certificate before selling an out of state license. All hunters who are planning to hunt in another state should verify hunter safety requirements with that state. Several states require a safety certificate for those born on or after January 1, 1949.

Individuals, 9 years or older who fall into the above requirements, wishing to take this course can register by calling the Fayette County Extension office at (979)968-5831, e-mail: fayette@ag.tamu.edu, or Clinton Bippert at (979) 968-5538 or (979) 966-7689 on or before Friday, August 17. The cost of the course is $15.00.

Each participant is requested to bring a sack lunch and a drink. Several breaks are planned. Also, bring a No. 2 pencil and a ball point pen to fill out the required registration form.
