Herman Louis Oppelt
Herman Louis Oppelt was born on November 8, 1948 to Herman and Catherine Oppelt. The large Oppelt family consisted of Albert Lee, currently deceased, Betty Tisdale, who resides in Lake City, Roger who lives in Homosassa with wife Stephanie, Richard who lives in Melbourne with wife Janice, and Nancy Cox who lives in Tyler, Texas.
Herman attended McAllen schools, Pan American College, and also served in the Army. After his military service, he worked for McAllen School District where he met his wife, Shirley Salter. They married on June 26, 1970, and have two children. Jeff lives in California with his son Jordan. Lori lives in Jacksonville with her husband Vance and their children Elise, Ivy, and Judah.
Herman worked for Rainbow Bread Co and Halliburton Services before building his own company, Herman’s Testing Co. Then the family moved to Florida where he started Central Florida Sandblasting. His final job was with Contrax Furnishings before his retirement due to health reasons.
One of his main loves was the mission field through his church at Westside Baptist Church. His mission trips took him to Montana, California, Alaska, Oregon, as well as Brazil, Africa and China. He loved the Lord and the work he did at Westside Baptist Church. Herman served many years as a deacon and was also chairman of the deacons.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Catherine and his brother, Albert Lee.
Memorial services will be Saturday July 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Westside Baptist Church in Gainesville, Florida.
