Just a Thought.......

A Belated Fourth of July

Rev.DaveFischer Rev.DaveFischer When I was young, I thought that the greatest Fourth of July was the year that my father’s friend, who ran a fireworksstand, gavemybrotherandIahugeboxof Cherry Bombs and M-80’s. Yes, we tried to blow up everything in sight, including one another. Yes, I now realize how crazy he was to give such a dangerous gift to two immature kids. But, since we survived, I lived to see another Fourth.

Since that time, I have come to realize that the greatest Fourth of July is always the one which we are currently celebrating.

The festivities, of our choice and of our place, are a constant reminder that we are still “the land of the free and the home of the brave”.

Given the news from around the world, of dictators and death, our freedom should be more than a party. It ought, also, to be a grand thanksgiving for the privilege of living free. And, our freedom should always be tempered by the words of the one-time Chaplain of the Senate, Peter Marshall, who said in his sermon, “Freedom is not the right to do as you please, rather, it is the opportunity to please to do what is right.”

That is the freedom which ultimately makes the difference. Doing the best thing because we can and because, when we don’t, all our freedoms are endangered.

It’s just a thought . . . . .
