Henry Paul Gersch
Henry Paul Gersch was born on January 28, 1929 in Serbin, Texas to Otto & Selma (Mutscher) Gersch. He was baptized on January 29, 1929 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Herman Schmidt and was confirmed on March 29, 1942, also at St. Paul Lutheran in Serbin by Rev. Schmidt. His confirmation verse was Psalm 143:10 “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” Henry attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Serbin and graduated from Giddings High School where he played the tuba in the band. Henry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and obtained the rank of Corporal before receiving his Honorable Discharge on May 19, 1953. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Roensch on April 18, 1954 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda by Rev. John Herzog. Henry was a service repairman for Jake’s Service in Giddings for nearly 40 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 276 in Giddings where he had served as Adjutant. He was also a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings serving in various offices and positions. Henry enjoyed playing dominoes, working at his farm, playing solitaire, watching sports and was a huge Giddings Buffaloes and Texas A & M Aggies fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Paul Henry in childhood, and sister and brother-in-law, Irene & Clarence Durrenberger.
Henry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Gersch of Giddings; son & daughter-in-law, James & Sharon Gersch of Houston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy & Jerry Proske of Houston and Lory & James A. “Jim” Mitschke of Giddings; three grandchildren, Nathan & Grace Proske of San Antonio, Justin Mitschke of College Station and Vanessa Mitschke of Giddings; four step grandchildren, Donna & Charles Taylor of Magnolia, Leanne Tomaszewski of Center, Monica & Willie Spiller of Bastrop, Nicole & Kevin Stobbs of College Station; eight great grandchildren, Dalton Taylor of Magnolia, Joseph, Emmalee & Chance Tomaszewski of Center, Josh, Taylor & Nathan Spiller of Bastrop and Landon Stobbs of College Station; two brothers-in-law, Elvas & Lorine Roensch of La Grange and Dean Ray & Doris Roensch of Tennessee, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial with military honors provided by American Legion Post 276 followed in the Giddings City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Nathan Proske, Kenneth Gersch, Gary Roensch, Christopher Roensch, Aaron Roensch and Ralph Mutscher. Honorary pallbearers were members of the American Legion Post 276 of Giddings.
