Just a Thought.......
I remember my grandfather, looking so handsome in his WWII uniform and being so angry that they had to wait two weeks for Russia to take Berlin. His captured Nazi pearl-handled knife still resides in our family.
My uncle Paul, a bomber pilot in the same war, never spoke of it. Aunt Rosi said he had seen too many of his friends blown out of the sky. But, he did drive a left-over jeep around his Iowa farm for years.
My cousin-in-law, Neil, spent a tour of duty in Korea, not so long ago, a bitter reminder that MacArthur was right, we should have settled it then and there.
A good friend, Jim, only won one thing in his life. The Viet Nam era draft lottery. He served and, unlike so many others, came back, but he was never the same.
My wife, Jo, trained for months in Germany and four times was on ready alert to go to Desert Storm. Thankfully, she was spared the trip.
The San Antonio paper regularly honors the fallen heroes of Iraq and Afghanistan and reminds us they are not anonymous, they are someone’s daughter or a family’s favorite son.
And I, who was safely tucked away in Seminary during it all, am grateful. My freedom, my country, my very life exists because they put their lives on the line.
And this weekend - Memorial Day Weekend - I thank them one and all. My prayer is that you will do the same.
