Two Men Arrested for Sexual Assault of a Child
On Saturday, March 24, at approximately 8 p.m., Lexington Police Officer Nurse made contact with a 14 year old black female, who advised that she was almost abducted by an unknown older black male. The victim advised that the suspect pulled alongside of her in an older model white sedan as she walked near the Lexington Livestock Commission after dark. The suspect then exited his vehicle and attempted to grab her and force her inside. She told Officer Nurse that she fought off the male assailant by striking him in the face with a closed fist and screaming for help. She reported that at that time, the man let her go and re-entered his vehicle, driving off at a high rate of speed. She ran toward the Lexington Police Department, when she was met by Officer Nurse at the Lexington Eagle Automotive Shop on the corner of Third and Main Streets.
During the course of the investigation, Captain Yarbrough and Nurse learned that the attempted abduction did not occur, and that the juvenile was attempting to protect two adult subjects from criminal charges, the names of which she revealed as Ronnie Lee Mathis, Jr. and Brandon Jerome Patterson.
On April 23, Yarbrough was monitoring the police scanner when he heard DPS Trooper Weiser report the arrest and booking in the Lee County jail of Ronnie Lee Mathis, Jr. for Possession of Marijuana. Yarbrough and Cpl. Wooldridge interviewed Mathis in the jail, who was suspected of Sexual Assault of a Child. During the interview, it was discovered the allegations were consistent with evidence discovered during the investigation of the March 24 incident with the 14 year old girl. The officers requested a warrant for Sexual Assault of Child.
On April 24, Yarbrough interviewed the 14 year old juvenile victim and also had her interviewed through the Children’s Advocacy Center. Through the interviews, the suspects involved in sexually assaulting the victim were positively identified. Yarbrough was able to locate both suspects, with the assistance of Deputy Skinner with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Yarbrough conducted an interview with Patterson at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. During the interview, it was discovered the allegations were consistent with evidence already discovered. The officers obtained sufficient evidence to request a warrant for Sexual Assault of Child against Patterson.
On April 25 and 26, Sexual Assault of Child charges were filed against Ronnie Lee Mathis, Jr., 19 years of age, and Brandon Jerome Patterson,21 years of age, respectively. Mathis is currently being held on a $50,000 bond and Patterson is being held on a $10,000 bond. Both are in the Lee County Law Enforcement Center. Both cases have been submitted to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office to be presented to the Lee County Grand Jury.
