CPA Firm Resigns Due to County Report Delays

On Monday, Commissioners heard from Doug Thielemann of Urban, Thielemann, Oltmann and Herms, LLP, concerning the recent approval for a time extension for the Contract for Auditing Services for the County. Thielemann noted that after the last Commissioners’ Court meeting, his firm had received some negative publicity about the delay in completing two of the most recent annual audits.

Thielemann said that for the audit for Fiscal Year 2009, data from the Tax Assessor/Collector’s Office was not available until eleven months after the close of the year. In addition, the audit for Fiscal Year 2010, data was not available until more than ten months after the close of the year.

Thielemann said, “With such delays in getting appropriate information, it is impossible to complete a valid audit in a timely manner.”

He went on to say that the audit for both years was completed shortly after the data was made available to his firm. He also stated that because the data for Fiscal Year 2011 is still not available, no meaningful work can be done on that audit.

Thielemann said, “Due to these circumstances and the negative publicity for our firm caused by this delay, Urban, Thielemann , Oltmann and Herms, LLP is no longer interested in performing audits for Lee County and cannot accept the extension of the contract as offered in the last Court Meeting.”

No solutions to the time delay in availability of information were discussed by the Court.

In other action, the Court proclaimed April 29 to May 6, 2012 Soil and Water Stewardship Week in Lee County. The Court also agreed to seek qualified applicants for two Brazos G Regional Water Planning Group voting-member positions. Anyone interested in serving in these positions should contact the County Judge’s office. The Court also approved the locations for early voting throughout Lee County. The early voting for the Primary Election will run from May 15 through May 25. As a convenience, votes may be cast at any of the approved locations, regardless of the voter’s assigned precinct.
