Superintendent’s Corner

Frances M. McArthur, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools Lexington Independent School District

It is busier than ever in Lexington schools as we begin the last six weeks of school. This past Monday at our Regular April Board Meeting, we recognized our secondary students who are advancing to Regionals in Academic UIL. I am so proud of our teachers and students and the gains we have made in Academic UIL at the elementary, middle school and high school level these past few years.

Last week we had a great time at our elementary talent show. Coach Mitchell, Coach Hodge, Ms. McManus, and Ms. Scantlin did an outstanding job of helping our students shine! This week we continued the fun with 5th grade Family Science Night and Elementary Reading night.

We continue to focus on our goal of ensuring every student will graduate from Lexington High School with all options available to them, whether it is college, military or career. For many of our students, Career and Technology courses offer them the opportunity to earn certifications that increase their earning potential upon high school graduation. In our Business and Accounting pathway, we have added an additional certification opportunity for our students this year. The new certification offering is Office Proficiency Assessment and Certification (OPAC). OPAC is a type of certification used in the business world to certify that an individual is competent in specified areas such as Windows, Keyboarding, Basic Word, Basic Excel, etc.

Ms. Eichler’s classes are concentrating on Windows, Keyboarding, and Basic Word this year. The certifications are beneficial to the students, as well as the school. Ms. Eichler’s goal for this year is to certify thirty students or more in one of the areas.

Lexington students will be joining students all across Texas to celebrate GenTXDay on May 4. We will have a College Acceptance Pep Rally to celebrate our seniors’ success and decisions to pursue higher education. Our seniors will wear a college shirt representing the college they will be attending in the fall. I hope the community joins us that afternoon to celebrate college and career readiness with our students.
