Delbert Ludwig Gersch
Delbert Ludwig Gersch was born near Northrup in Lee County, Texas to Theodore & Olga (Steglich) Gersch. He was baptized on September 19, 1926 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas by Rev. Herman Schmidt and was confirmed there as well in 1940, also by Rev. Herman Schmidt. Delbert graduated from Giddings High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. Delbert was united in marriage to Olga Mae Hielscher on July 30, 1950 at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Winchester, Texas by Rev. George Heinemeier. This union was blessed with five children, Daryl, Kenneth, Don, Karen & Denise. Delbert was a retired HVAC contractor, who owned and operated Jake’s Sales and Service in Giddings for many years. He was always an active member of the community and had served as the president of the Giddings Chamber of Commerce, president of the Giddings Rotary Club, was a member of the Giddings Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in establishing the first Giddings Geburtstag and building the first Giddings public swimming pool. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings where he had served on the building committee of the current church sanctuary, had been a member of the Board of Trustees, served on the Board of Christian Day School and had sung in the choir. Delbert enjoyed spending time working at his farm, hunting, fishing and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and a sisterin law, Harriet Zoch.
Delbert is survived by his five children, Daryl Gersch of Giddings, Kenneth & Christine Gersch of Giddings, Don Gersch of Dallas, Karen & Gene Urban of Giddings and Denise & Marty Snyder of Houston; seven grandchildren, Dustin & Lauren Gersch of Pflugerville, Ryan Gersch of College Station, Torie & Lewie Morrow of Orlando, FL, Zach Gersch of Austin, Kacey & Jason Mitschke of Dime Box, Garett Urban of Giddings and Samantha “Sammi” Snyder of Houston; one great grandson, Austin Morrow of Orlando, FL; sister, Leona & Earl Sandoz of Giddings; two brothers, Herman & Fran Gersch of Northrup and Walter & Laverne Gersch of Northrup; brother-in-law, Alford Zoch of Winchester, as well several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Delbert Gersch, 85 of Giddings, are scheduled for 2: 00 P. M. on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial will follow in the Giddings City Cemetery.
The Gersch family will be present for visitation Wednesday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p. m. Visitation will also be Thursday, April 19, 2012 from 7:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings.
Mr. Gersch died on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at his home in Giddings.
Serving as pallbearers will be Garett Urban, Zach Gersch, Ryan Gersch, Dustin Gersch, Jason Mitschke and David Gersch.
