Lee County Go Texan BBQ Competition Moving from Giddings to Lexington for 2012

The Lee County Go Texan Committee wishes to announce a change of venue for this year’s Go Texan BBQ competition. The competition has been held the past several years during the Lee County Fair’s Charcoal Challenge. This year the competition will be held in conjunction with the 47th Annual Lexington Homecoming BBQ Cookoff on May 4-5. The move was prompted by county teams wishing to qualify to go to the Houston Rodeo Cookoff, but were unable to obtain a spot at the Charcoal Challenge due to the limited number of team spaces available. The Go Texan Committee felt it necessary to give any county team the ability to compete for the title and represent Lee County in Houston.

The highest scoring county team in the three meat categories (chicken, ribs and brisket) will be crowned 2012 Lee County Go Texan BBQ Champion and wins the right to represent the county at the 2013 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s World Championship BBQ Cookoff. The Houston cookoff is usually held the last week in February of every year. Lee County is one of 62 Go Texan counties in Texas that regularly competes at the Houston Rodeo cookoff and has placed or won in past competitions against up to approximately 500 cookoff teams.

Any county team wishing to compete for the Go Texan title must register at the cookoff by 10:00 a.m. on May 5th. The team’s Chief Cook must be a resident of Lee County and must provide a valid photo ID with proof of residency in order to sign up. There are no additional fees required to compete for the Go Texan title.

Official rules and entry forms for the Lexington Homecoming BBQ Cookoff can be found on the website at www.LexingtonTexas.com under the Homecoming Info web page, or you can contact Kevin Allen, Lee Co Go Texan Ambassador, at 512- 461- 2011 or by email cowboywaydesign@aol.com.
