Milam County Nature Festival Coming Up!
The 3rd Annual Milam County Nature Festival will be on Saturday April 14 from 9am to 3pm at Rockdale Fair Park in Rockdale TX, rain or shine. This free, fun and educational event will have something for adults and children alike, so bring the whole family. Bring the whole neighborhood for that matter.Our Nature Photo Contest submission deadline was extended to Wednesday, April 4. This has 3 age divisions: under 12, 13 through 17, and 18 plus; as well as 5 categories: wildlife, landscape/scenery, people in nature, plants/flora, and funny nature photo. Winners will be announced at the Festival and all photos will be on display. This Nature Festival will have exhibits and demonstrations on: bats, birds, bees and bee hives, Texas crawdads, Houston toads, prairie dogs, bryophytes and lichens, pollinators, native grasses,wildflowers, and The El Camino Real National Historic Trail, which runs through Rockdale and Milam County, and many more.
Hands on activities for the kids will include: making their favorite animal track molds, performing an archaeological dig for ancient artifacts, building various nature crafts, learning about fishing and practicing fly casting, and getting their face painted with their favorite wild creature.
Presentations by experts will be held inside the New Salem building and include: the value of bats and how to build bat houses, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies with your own backyard buffet, wildflower legends and folklore explaining early Indian and Greek mythological stories on the naming and use of wildflowers, and the impacts of drought on fish and wildlife resources.
