Just a Thought.......
It is common in Texas to talk about the lonesome pine on the prairie. That is not my story. I live next to a lonesome palm. I noticed this tree when the wife and I moved into our little cul-de-sac some five years ago. It seemed totally out of place among the oaks and ashes, especially since it towered over all of them. Since that first day, I have watched it, in good times and bad, stand its ground. And, after a while, I began to worry that it might go over in a storm, or die in the drought.
The palm tree had other ideas. Neither heat, nor cold, storm, nor still has been able to dislodge it from its place, now a full two stories above the house in front of it.
I wonder. Why there? Or who did? Sometimes I think it was hauled home from the Coast by someone who wanted a little vacation reminder in their backyard. Other times, it seems to make more sense that it came in on the same wind that tosses it so violently when the weather is bad.
When all else fails, I make up my own story, that it is a Hawaiian reminder because its shape is much like a hula dancer in her famous straw skirt. But that always gets me in trouble with the beloved who wants to know how I know so much about native dancers.
Whatever its beginning, the palm tree is today a great reminder of the importance of perserverance, one-day-at-a-time keeping on until the goal is achieved.
Thus it inspires my prayer life. “Lord, make me as steadfast and faithful as that old palm tree.”
It’s just a thought, but it has stood the test of time and trials.
