Edward “E.J.” James Mitschke


Edward James “E.J.” Mitschke was born on September 13, 1930 in Loebau, Texas to Ervin & Gertrude (Kasper) Mitschke. He was baptized on October 4, 1930 at Christ Lutheran Church in Loebau by Rev. Durow and was confirmed on March 25, 1945 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Houston by Rev. Harms. E.J. was united in marriage first to Dean Webster, and later to Bonnie Jean Bishop at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Houston by Rev. Edwin Kieper. They lived in Houston for many years, where E.J. was a successful brick contractor, before moving to Giddings in 1982. Jean preceded him in death on November 16, 1994. He married Diane Stewart on May 27, 2000 in Giddings. E.J. was a building contractor and owned and operated General Remodeling and Repairs in Giddings for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings and a member of the Giddings American Legion Post 276 and the Giddings VFW Post 4475. As a young man, he served his country in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific and also in San Diego, training and working primarily as a stenographer and typist. He enjoyed riding around on his tractor and building and fixing things up.

E.J. was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin & Gertrude Mitschke; his wife, Jean Mitschke and a brother, Erich Mitschke.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Mitschke of Giddings; his son and daughter-in-law, James & Barbara Hunt of Kansas; his daughter and son-in-law, Connie & Ricky Kelley of Willis; three grandchildren, Jarred Hunt of Kansas, James “Bud” Kubeczka Jr. of Willis and Brandy Kubeczka of Willis; brother, Charles Mitschke & his wife, Carol Anne of Houston; three sisters, Awanda Mitschke of Houston, Carol Hamon & husband, Ray of Houston and Hulda Lee Miller & her husband, Rev. Albert of Austin; aunt, Rosalie Kasper Hohle of Giddings; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Leslie & Barbara Stewart of Giddings; three step grandchildren, April Kelley of Willis, Heather Gloger & her husband, Jason of Paige and Jessica Stewart of Giddings; seven step great grandchildren, Davey Ruddick, Dustin Ruddick and Alyssa Blasingime all of Willis, A.J. Belanger, Caylie Belanger and Christian Gloger all of Paige and James Stewart of Giddings, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends.

Funeral services for E. J. Mitschke, 81 of Giddings were held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner officiating and Rev. Albert Miller assisting. Burial will be in the Giddings City Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 300 North Grimes, Giddings, Texas 78942.
