Lady Eagles Drop Jarrell 7-2

by Mike Organ

Lexington remained undefeated in the District 27-AA softball race with a 7-2 win over Jarrell. Lexington scored three runs in the first inning and never relinquished the lead.

Mackenzie Brown led off the Lexington first with a walk. Bailey Reynolds followed with another walk. Kasey Smith delivered both with a two-out double. Kassie Prew then sent Smith scampering home with a single and a 3-0 lead.

Lexington added to their lead in the third on an eventful play. Smith hit a soft fly ball to short right centerfield. Two Jarrell defenders ran into one another trying to catch the fly ball. The ball dropped to the ground just behind the two stunned and fallen fielders. By the time the ball was retrieved by the shortstop, Smith was cruising into third base. Two pitches later a wild pitch allowed Smith to score.

Lexington’s final barrage came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brown singled, Reynolds walked, Meghann Wrinkle singled home Brown, and Courtney Robertson singled home two more runs for a 7- 0 lead.

The last two outs came on Lexington’s second double play of the game. A grounder to Robertson’s left had her toss the ball to first, and then Prew tossed the ball to Wrinkle covering second, who then ran down the runner before the second run could score.

The first Lexington double play occurred when a sharp fly ball was caught by Brown, who then fired it to Wrinkle, who zipped it to Prew at first base before the runner could get back to the base safely.

Robertson pitched the entire game, giving up six hits and striking out four.

The Lexington Lady Eagles are now 4-0 in district play with a season record of 14-5.
