Lady Eagles @ Academy Tourney

by Mike Organ

After winning their first nine games of the 2012 season, the Lady Eagle softball team lost to Salado in the semi-finals of the Academy tourney last weekend. The Lady Eagles bounced back from the loss to defeat Rosebud- Lott 12-1 in the third place game.

As you will notice, several of the games did not go five or more innings. This is a tourney rule, due to time constraints for the tourney.

Lexington defeated Waco Connally 5-2 in their first game. Courtney Robertson doubled home the first run and Jorden Kelley, the courtesy runner, scored on interference by the third baseman in the top of the first inning, giving Lexington all the runs it needed. Madison Bexley singled home two runs in the third, and Kasey Smith singled in a run in the same inning.

Meghann Wrinkle doubled home a run in the first inning during the Lexington win over Shoemake to get things started. Kasey Smith, Madison Bexley, and Mariah Thornton each got a run home as the Lady Eagles took a 4- 0 lead in the top of the first. Rachael Beard, Thornton, and Chelsea Nadeau scored unearned runs in the top of the third inning as the Lady Eagles whipped a 5A team.

Lexington took an early lead as Wrinkle singled and moved to second as the Bartlett leftfielder missed the ball. Robertson singled her home. Jorden Kelley, the courtesy runner, then scored on an error by the third baseman. The Lady Eagles added three more in the second, as Thornton and Nadeau walked to open the inning. Mackenzie Brown had an infield single to load the bases. Kassie Prew hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Thornton. Robertson hit the ball to third base, who erred in fielding to reload the bases. Smith walked to force in a run and the final run scored as the pitcher erred on Bexley’s grounder.

Lexington spotted Thrall a 7-1 lead and then came roaring back to take an exciting 9-8 win. Down 7-1 the Lady Eagles scored four in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Wrinkle and three consecutive doubles by Robertson, Smith, and Bexley. Bexley scored on an error later in the inning. Lexington took the lead in the sixth on a two-out single by Nadeau, followed by a Brown single, and a Prew single to load the bases. Wrinkle singled home a run. Robertson singled home two and Smith singled home the winner.

Lexington got off to a bad start in their first loss of the year. A hit batter and a double scored the first run for Salado. Two errors on the same hit ball allowed the second run to score. The poor defense continued in the second as Lexington made three more errors as Salado ran up a 7- 0 lead. Lexington got one back in the bottom of the second as Racheal Beard singled home Smith, who had singled. Salado upped their lead to 9-1 in the third. Lexington answered as Brown singled and Wrinkle walked. Both advanced on a passed ball. Robertson hit a grounder between the wickets at third, allowing both runs to score. Three more runs in the next two innings was not enough to catch Salado.

Lexington lit up the scoreboard in the first inning on six walks and singles by Prew and Smith. A double by Wrinkle and a single by Robertson combined with a couple of errors and walks added four more to the Lexington total. Singles by Wrinkle and Smith, and walks, put two more runs on the board. Lexington added a final run in the bottom of the fourth to secure the win. PHOTO BY BELINDA ROBERTSON.
