Just a Thought.......
Personal: To the owner of the tan “John’s Guns” gimme cap. It is hanging half-way down the fence line on CR 410 East, out of Lexington. However, before you make the drive, know that the cap is scuffed on the left side of the bill. If yours wasn’t, save yourself the trip. But, thanks for losing it. Your potential loss gives me a chance to note someone’s honesty.
Your cap was probably in the ditch. Abandoned. A perfect candidate for “finders-keepers”, “losers-weepers”. Except that whoever found it was not raised that way. They grew up under a different set of instructions.
“It’s not yours, son. Leave it alone.”
“But, dad, nobody’s wearing it!”
“Doesn’t matter. It isn’t yours, leave it. Better yet, hang it on that fence post. They might come back looking for it.”
Maybe you will. If you do, wear it with the sure knowledge that you have been blessed by an ethic of consideration for the property of others -- forged in a childhood where doors could be left open and money could lie in safety because “if it isn’t yours, don’t touch it.”
The issue wasn’t fingerprints; it was honesty -- Abe Lincoln endorsed and recommended.
You will understand that, until I saw the cap, I thought it might be a thing of the past. Now I know better.
Thank you, kind stranger.
