August Leopold Wolff Sr.

Feb. 10, 1919 - Feb. 13, 2012

Funeral services for August Wolff Sr., 93 of Giddings, were held on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Jeremy Walloch officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Giddings American Legion Post 276, followed.

August Leopold Wolff, a first generation American, was born in San Antonio, Texas on February 10, 1919 to Rev. August L. Wolff and Elizabeth Koch Wolff. He was baptized on April 6, 1919 at St. John Lutheran Church in San Antonio by his father. He confirmed his baptismal vows on April 6, 1933 at St. John Lutheran Church in San Antonio. His confirmation verse was Psalm 111:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.”

He graduated from Brackenridge High School in San Antonio and continued his education at Texas Lutheran Junior College in Seguin. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from the University of Texas in 1941. In February, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He served the Army at Bryan Field in Bryan, Texas as a technical photographer until his discharge in December of 1945.

On April 9, 1944, he was united in marriage to Lucille Fritsche of Giddings at St. John Lutheran Church in San Antonio with Rev. August L. Wolff officiating. Their marriage was blessed with two children, August, Jr. and Dianne.

August was employed with the First National Bank in Giddings where he worked as a teller, loan officer, senior vice president and director. He retired in 1982 after 35 years of service.

He has been a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church since 1946. He served as chairman of the church council, sang in the choir and was especially active in the Brotherhood organization leading many functions and serving on numerous committees and holding several offices.

August was always active in civic and community affairs. He was a member of the Giddings American Legion Post 276, served as president of the Giddings Area Chamber of Commerce and held numerous offices in the Giddings Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1949, his mother in 1974 and his daughter in 2009.

August is survived by his loving wife, Lucille Wolff of Giddings; their son, August, Jr. & his wife, Judy of Lincoln and their children: Leah and Dennis Murphy and their sons, Andrew and John of Round Rock and Elizabeth and Richard Osborn and their daughter, Lucy of Round Rock; their son-in-law, Melvin Zoch of Giddings and he and Dianne’s children: Kathy Garza and her children Morgan and Bailey of Giddings and Kristy and Michael Gholson and their children, Heather, Zachary and Chase of Giddings; his sister, Elizabeth Mohr of Fredricksburg; his sisterin law, Elvira Pfluger of Austin and also by nieces, nephews and many friends including the members of Martin Luther Lutheran Church.

August passed away, with his wife of 67 years by his side, the afternoon of Monday, February 13, 2012 at the Country Care Plex in Giddings.

Serving as pallbearers were Michael Gholson, Dennis Murphy, Richard Osborn, Ray Rinn, Zachary Gholson and Chase Gholson. Honorary pallbearers were Curtis Frosch, Fred Hannes and Robert Fuchs.

Memorials may be made to the Martin Luther Lutheran Church General Fund or the charity of one’s choice.
