Fayette County Genealogical Society

The Fayette County Genealogical Society will hold its next meeting and program on Saturday, February 25th at 10 a.m. in the Conference Room at the Fayette County Heritage Library, located at 855 S. Jefferson St. in La Grange.

Jo White, the author of Sunbonnet Angels: Hitch Your Wagon to a Star, with the help of two friends, Kay Scanapico and Judy Matejovsky, will present a three-woman skit that features oral vignettes of stories in her book, which is a combination of foot-noted history and folklore about the women who helped civilize Texas in the early pioneering days.

A sixth generation Texan, born in Eastland County and reared in Bee County during the Depression, Mrs. White is proud of her Scots-Irish heritage. She dedicated her book to her grandmother, Alameda Josephine Scallorn Denson, who was a native of Fayette County. A lover of history, Mrs. White’s quest for stories, folklore and the heritage of the women in her book, not only took her around Texas and the U.S., but also to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

A remarkably active 91-year old, Mrs. White moved to La Grange with her husband, Melvin, in 1993 from Hill County after living in various locales around Texas. Their sons are Daniel Allen White, a general surgeon, practicing in La Grange, and David Ashley White, a widely-published composer and Director of Moore’s School of Music at the University of Houston.

The public is invited to this special presentation. For more information, contact Connie Sneed at 979-968-4963.
