In January, the Trinity Christian COOP group hosted a local spelling bee through the Scripps National Spelling Bee association. The six children participating were given hundreds of spelling words to memorize. Students were tested on their ability to correctly spell words through an elimination style tournament. The winner of the local bee was Ben Newton of Giddings. Ben’s parents are Mike and Kim Newton. Ben will advance to Houston to compete in the Area tournament in March. Winners of Area Scripps Spelling Bees across the country will ultimately go to Washington, D.C. to compete at the national level. Savannah Knippa received second place. She is the daughter of Matthew and Brandi Knippa of Lexington.
