Donations Not Keeping Pace With Patient Need

The Blood Center has issued an appeal for blood donations and urges everyone who can, to make a life-saving blood donation as soon as possible. All blood types are needed, though the supply of O negative, O positive and A+ are at particularly critical levels. This time last year, the Center was 200 units ahead of this year’s collections. The Center estimates that over 200 blood donations are needed daily to meet patient needs, bring stock levels at the 37 area hospitals up to adequate levels and to replenish the emergency reserve.

“The Blood Center is currently meeting community needs but does not have an adequate backup supply should a trauma or disaster occur,” says Darin Manlove, Manager of Hospital Services. “We encourage all who are able, to please come to one of our donor centers or mobile blood drives to donate as soon as possible.” Visit www.inyourhands.org to find a mobile blood drive near you.

Minimum requirements for donating include being at least 17 years old, weighing at least 115 lbs for whole blood donation and 110 lbs for platelet donation, bring a photo ID and be in generally good health. The process takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Whole blood donors may donate every 56 days and platelet donors may donate every 10 days up to 24 times per year.

To schedule an appointment, please call The Blood Center of Central Texas at (512) 206-1266. Visit The Center’s website at www.inyourhands.org to learn more about blood donation or to find a mobile blood drive near you.

Walk-ins are always welcome!
