Lee County Go Texan Committee
The Lee County Go Texan committee has been very busy the past few months holding various events promoting the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and raising needed funds for awarding scholarships to deserving Lee county seniors graduating in 2012. The committee consists of volunteers throughout the Lee county area who help plan, assist and coordinate the various events all year round.
The first weekend in September of every year, the Lee County Go Texan holds a raffle fundraiser at the Dime Box SPJST Hall. There were many items that were raffled off to help raise scholarship money. The $ 10,000 raffle winners were Doug and Dorothy Rackel and the second place prize money went to Glen Jiral. The Rackels were gracious in donating their winnings back to the scholarship fund. The Go Texan committee also showcases the previous scholarship award winners at the banquet that is held before the raffle. Fifteen of the seventeen scholarship recipients were in attendance to be recognized at the banquet. The other two recipients had previous obligations at their universities and could not attend.
The Go Texan committee holds annual competitions in order to qualify individuals the chance to represent Lee County at the annual Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Area Go Texan Contests which will be held in Katy on January 27 & 28 at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center. The teams in various events compete against 62 other Area Go Texan counties for prize buckles, trophies, saddles and various other awards. This year’s county representatives who will be competing at the contests in their respective events are: Walter & Bryan Gersch in horseshoes; Glen Albrecht & Kyle Kasper in washers; Charlie Malke & Donald Menzel in dominos; Dorothy Falke (Meme’s Quilts) in quilts; Earl Schulz, Eric Pillack, Michael Griffith and Randy Schulz in Senior Team Penning; Zach Rother, Lane Turner, Whitney Pillack and Megan Rother in Junior Team Penning. The Jr. and Sr. Team Penning teams will also be competing in Team Sorting. The Washer Pitching team of Albrecht and Kasper and Jr. Team Penning riders of Rother, Turner and Pillack were Champions at the 2011 competition and will be vying to defend their titles this year.
On February 23-25, the World Championship Barbecue Cook-off at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo will be happening. The BBQ team representing Lee County this year are the Lee County Outlaws headed by chief cook Shane Hoffman. The county representative for this competition is named at the county fair barbecue cook-off held in May.
The Lee Co. Go Texan committee also purchases approximately 100 tickets for the Houston Rodeo for a designated night that recognizes the county in its fundraising efforts. This year Lee County Salute Night is on Friday, March 9 with performer Reba McEntire. The tickets are premium seating which are located close to the bucking chutes near the arena floor. County representatives who will be riding in the rodeo’s Grand Entry parade are: County Judge Paul Fischer, County Clerk Sharon Blasig and Lee County Pct. 3 Commissioner Ronny Bradshaw.
