Just a Thought.......

Rev. Dave Fischer Rev. Dave Fischer 2:00 in the morning. A coyote howls in the dark. Not so unusual, except this time he was right outside my window. Disturbing, because he was so close.

For a moment, I thought of him as an intruder. But, when dawn came, I had a better insight. He was there to remind me who was the real alien. And, it was me.

The coyote, or at least his ancestors, have been here long before there ever was a Lexington. They were among the original inhabitants. And, they are going to be here long after we are gone.

The bright lights and the big buildings of the city effectively hide this truth from us. The monuments we build to ourselves comfort us with the false impression that we are in charge.

But out here, in the country, we know better. Here we watch as abandoned houses slowly crumble. Here we notice, even concrete roads are quickly reclaimed by nature. She has been in the business of cleaning up our messes for so long that she hardly hesitates when the next opportunity presents itself.

Paying attention to this reality, humbles us. We are not the be-all and end-all of existence. We are humans, frail beings passing through to familiar words, “Dust to dust and earth to earth”.

The thunderous words of God in the book of Job put us all in our place. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Have you commanded the morning since your days began? Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars?

That the eagle mounts up and makes his nest on high?” No, it is not, and we are right to remember that, even when the messenger of that memory is a coyote.

It’s just a thought, but it helps me whenever I get a little too full of myself.
