Lady Eagles Win Lexington Tourney

by Mike Organ

Lexington won its own basketball tourney with wins over Taylor, Dime Box, and Flatonia. In the pool play format, Lexington defeated Taylor 36-24 on Thursday and Dime Box 36- 17 Friday morning to clinch a spot in Saturday’s Championship game.

The Flatonia game on Saturday was one to remember. Flatonia took a 22-10 lead to the halftime break. Lexington started fighting back as soon as the second half started. The fight back ended when Miranda Jones dropped in the winning bucket as time expired.

Mackenzie Brown was named the tourney MVP for her leadership and scoring throughout the tourney. Christen Schneider and Madison Bexley were chosen to the all-tournament team.

Lexington defeated Taylor behind Brown’s 18 points and Johna Alford’s 10 rebounds. Jones added five caroms to the Lady Eagle total. Alford impressively stole the ball five times while guarding the post.

In the win over Dime Box, Schneider led the way with 14 points and eight rebounds. Bexley had 11 points and four rebounds collected.

The win over Flatonia in the championship game was a team effort. Brown led the scoring with 10, Bexley with nine, and Meghann Wrinkle eight. Jones grabbed eight rebounds in addition to her game winning shot.

Lexington is now 6-6 for the 2011 season and began district play Tuesday night as they hosted Thorndale. They will travel to Florence Friday and host Academy next Tuesday before taking time off for the Christmas break.
