Eagles Open Playoffs with New Waverly
Lexington will open their march back to the state championship game in Groesbeck Friday night at 7:30. The opposition will be the New Waverly Bulldogs. You will remember New Waverly was in the same district with Lexington a few years back.
New Waverly is 6-5 for the season. The Dogs have wins over Leon 27-14, and Normangee 28-20 in non-district action. NW beat Hemphill 56-54, Deweyville 57-6, and Groveton 12-0 in district play. They beat Frankston 41-38 with a fourth quarter comeback Saturday night in bi-district action.
NW losses came against Lovelady 34-14, Hearne 12-6, and Franklin 28- 6 in non- district action. NW lost to district champion San Augustine 40-35 and to Corrigan Camden 46-21 in district play.
The Maroon and Gray Bulldogs run from a power-I formation the majority of the time. They will go to the spread formation at times to confuse the defense. The Bulldogs look a little off-key on offense, but they know what they are doing. The unusual manner the Bulldogs take is to make the defense relax and then they attack. You cannot take anything for granted.
Defensively, the Bulldogs run a five-man front defense with a fourman zone pass defense. No team the Bulldogs have played this season have a passing offense anywhere near Lexington’s. With the zone pass defense, there will be openings for pass receptions.
Prediction: Lexington 35 New Waverly 14, unless the Lexington team that played Rosebud-Lott shows up.
