Smithville Tops Giddings’ Buffalos

Buffs’ Defense Holds Smithville to 197 Yards

Smithville continued its perfect season with a 24-21 win over Giddings Friday night. The Tigers are now 7-0 for the season, with one game lost to the fire. Giddings is now 6-2 for the season and 2-1 in district play.

Giddings’ defense held Smithville to 197 total yards for the game, but allowed a 45-yard touchdown run by Gray Morris in the first quarter and a 12-yard trip by DaAron Jackson in the second. The scores gave Smithville a 14-0 lead at halftime.

Morris stunned Giddings with a 98-yard second half kick-off return for a touchdown, as the Tigers moved out to 21- 0. Giddings cut into the lead as they opened up their offense. Deon Hickey scored on a 77-yard pass from Jackie Wade for the first Buff score. Leading rusher Joseph Glenn zipped in from 30 yards out to cut the lead to 21-14 with Michael Rangel’s two PAT kicks. All this action took place in the third quarter.

Jamie Swartz added to Smithville’s total with a 21-yard field goal after a Tiger drive stalled out at the Giddings four-yard line. The field goal proved to be the winning points. Giddings added their final score on a 39-yard romp late in the game to make the final score 24-21 Smithville.

Smithville is now 3-0 in district action, with two tough games at Navasota this week and LaGrange at home in game 10.

Giddings is 2-1 in district action, with a trip to Rockdale this week and a trip to Navasota the final week.
